1. The Matrix Series

Movies to watch with Friends
Source: Warner Bros.Pictures
About the movie:
The Matrix was released in the year 1999 & since then it is one of the well-known science fiction action films that was written and directed by the Wachowskis & features Keanu Reeves as the focal point of the whole star cast, it also includes Laurence Fishburne along with Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano. It depicts a dystopian future that is having an imaginary society focused on dehumanizing and as unpleasant as possible, you will observe humans trapped inside a simulated reality calling it the Matrix, created by thought-capable machines (artificial beings) to deviate human beings while using their bodies as an energy source. When computer programmer Thomas Anderson, under the hacker alias "Neo", uncovers this truth, he "is drawn into a rebellion against the machines" along with other people who have been freed from the Matrix.

Cast & their roles:

  • Keanu Reeves as Thomas A. Anderson also known as Neo in the movie: He is a  computer programmer who works as a hacker. Reeves expressed his character as a person who felt that something was weird, and was searching for Morpheus and the truth to break free. Initially, Will Smith was approached for playing this role but he turned down to make Wild Wild West, because of scepticism over the film's ambitious bullet-time special effects. He later stated he was "not mature enough as an actor" at that time, and that if given the role, he "would have messed it up". Another who turned down the role was Nicolas Cage because of quoted "family obligations". Warner Bros. later sought Brad Pitt or Val Kilmer for the role but when both declined, the studio brought in Reeves & won it ahead of Jonny Depp the Wachowskis' first choice.

  • Laurence Fishburne playing the vital character of Morpheus: A human freed from the Matrix, captain of the Nebuchadnezzar. Fishburne said that once he read the script, he did not understand why other people found it confusing. However, he had a doubt if the movie would ever be made because it was way ahead of its time & "so smart". The Wachowskis asked Fishburne to base his performance on the character Morpheus in Neil Gaiman's Sandman comics. Gary Oldman including Samuel L. Jackson and Val Kilmer were all considered for the part. Despite many rumours surrounding the plot, Sean Connery was offered the role of the Architect in the sequels, not that of Morpheus.

  • Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity: Freed by Morpheus, a crew member of the Nebuchadnezzar, Neo's romantic interest. After reading the script, Moss expressed that initially, she did not think that she had to do the extreme acrobatic actions as described in the script. She was circumspect on how the Wachowskis would get to direct a movie with such a heavy budget, but then after spending about an hour with them going through the storyboard, she realised why some people would trust them with so much faith. Moss also mentioned how she underwent a three-hour physical test during casting, so she knew what to expect subsequently. The role Trinity made Moss, who later stated that she had no career before. None.
  •  Janet Jackson was first approached for this role but scheduling conflicts kept her away from accepting it. In one of the interviews, she told that turning down the role was not easy for her, so she later referenced The Matrix in the 'Intro' and 'Outro' interludes on her studio album named Discipline.

  • Hugo Weaving playing the role of Agent Smith: A sentient "Agent" program of the Matrix whose purpose is to destroy Zion and stop humans from getting out of the Matrix. Unlike those other guys, he has ambitions to free himself from his duties. Weaving stated that the character was fun to play because it took his attention. He developed a neutral accent but even more for the character he was playing. He didn't want Smith to sound human but nor robotic at the same time, and also said that the Wachowskis' voices had influenced his voice in the film. When the shooting began, Weaving mentioned that he was excited to be a part of something so unique. Jean Reno was rumoured to be offered the role, but he declined because of his unwillingness to move to Australia for the production.
  • Joe Pantoliano acting as Cypher: Another human freed by Morpheus, but one who regrets taking the red pill and seeks to be returned to the Matrix. It was Pantoliano's 2nd time working with Wachowskis prior to appearing in The Matrix.

  • Marcus Chong playing the role Tank: He is the "operator" of the Nebuchadnezzar, he is Dozer's brother, and like him was born outside the Matrix.
  • Anthony Ray Parker taking Dozer's role: He is a "natural" human born outside of the Matrix, and pilot of the Nebuchadnezzar.
  • Julian Arahanga acting as Apoc: Apoc a freed human and crew member on the Nebuchadnezzar.

  • Matt Doran playing the role Mouse: A freed human and programmer on the Nebuchadnezzar.
  • Gloria Foster in the role of Oracle: Oracle is a prophet who still resides in the Matrix, helping the freed humans with her foresight and wisdom.
  • Belinda McClory is seen playing the role of Switch: A human freed by Morpheus, and crew member of the Nebuchadnezzar.

  • Paul Goddard plays the character of Agent Brown: One of two sentient "Agent" programs in the Matrix who work with Agent Smith with a mission to destroy Zion and stop humans from escaping the system.
  • Robert Taylor acts an Agent Jones: Second sentient "Agent" program working with Agent Smith.
  • Ada Nicodemou as DuJour

4. Sherlock Holmes

Movies to watch with Friends
Source:  Warner Bros. Pictures

About the movie:
After successfully catching the serial killer known as Lord Blackwood, legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes along with his assistant Dr Watson were just about to close another victorious case. But when Blackwood under some unknown circumstance returns from the grave and resumes his killing spree, Holmes must prepare again to take up the hunt. Contending with his partner's new fiancée and the dimwitted head of Scotland Yard, the fearless detective must collect & go through all the clues that will lead him into a twisted web of murder, deceit, and black magic - and the venomous embrace of temptress Irene Adler.

Cast & their roles:

  • Robert Downey Jr. playing the all-important role of Sherlock Holmes, a scientist of high calibre and eccentric detective-for-hire who becomes a wanted fugitive in his hunt for Lord Blackwood.  Downey revealed what his wife had to say: "that when he reads the description of the guy who is — quirky and kind of nuts — then it could be a description of him. Downey thought of focusing more on Holmes' patriotism and his bohemianism and felt that his work on Chaplin had prepared him for an English accent.  Both Downey and Director Guy Ritchie are martial arts enthusiasts and have been inspired by the Baritsu that was mentioned in the 1901 story The Adventure of the Empty House. Downey lost weight for the part because, while having a chat with Chris Martin, Martin recommended that Holmes look "gaunt" and "skinny".

  • Jude Law in the role of Dr John Watson who is a Holmes' companion and close friend who is also a surgeon and a veteran of the Second Afghan War. Watson is more like the original character, who was more of a worker, rather than the bumbling fool portrayed by the actor Nigel Bruce in the 1930s–40s films. Law in the past had appeared in the Granada Television series called The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, in an episode based on The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place. As he was a Holmes fan, Law's attention helped him identify that there was material unexplored in other adaptations and  Law was cast because of his positive meeting with Downey and concurred the film would have to explore Holmes and Watson's friendship. Downey was a firm believer that by emphasizing Watson's qualities as a former soldier, a doctor, a womanizer and a gambler, it would make him perfect for a more favourable foil for Holmes.

  • Mark Strong in the role of Lord Henry Blackwood who happens to be an aristocratic serial killer dabbling in the occult to compel others to do his bidding. As he returned after his execution, Blackwood unveils a plan to take control of the British Empire. He has been provided with many supernatural elements to his character, and his presence is usually accompanied by a menacing crow. It was Strong's worked 3rd time working with director Ritchie and said he appreciates the director's lack of ego and how easy to work attitude.
  • Rachel McAdams in the form of Irene Adler, she is an American femme fatale from New Jersey who managed to outwit Holmes twice in the past, as chronicled in Doyle's story A Scandal in Bohemia. In the movie, she is no longer married to Godfrey Norton and visits Holmes' to ask help for the case. Downey managed to convince Ritchie to cast McAdams after he briefed him that she would not be looking too young to be his love interest. In this area the film manages to depart from Doyle's original, where Holmes never got to meet Adler again after the one occasion where she outwitted him; the film conversely implies that the two of them met a number of times later also had a close love affair.

  • Kelly Reilly acting as Mary Morstan who is a governess & the one Watson wishes to marry due to which it causes a conflict with Holmes.
  • Eddie Marsan acting as Inspector Lestrade who is an investigator from Scotland Yard who hires Holmes to look into the murders. Unlike in many previous sherlock holmes storylines, Lestrade this time is not portrayed as a bumbling inspector but is shown to be a rather competent officer (though he is relatively fed up with Holmes).
  • Hans Matheson playing the character Lord Coward, he is the Home Secretary who is Blackwood's right-hand man and assisted Blackwood in all his murders and also had his name as one of the rare allies aware of Blackwood's usage of technology to feign magical powers.

  • Geraldine James acting as Mrs Hudson, she is  Sherlock Holmes' landlady. This is James' second Holmes film. She earlier had played the role of Dr Mortimer's wife in the 2002 adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles.
  • James Fox as Sir Thomas Rotheram, father of Lord Blackwood and Head of the Four Orders.
  • Robert Maillet as Dredger, a 7 foot, French-speaking henchman working for Blackwood.
  • William Hope as American Ambassador Standish.
  • William Houston as Constable Clark
